Dr Gopi Chand Khilnani graduated with an MBBS in 1978 and an MD in Medicine from the University of Rajasthan in 1982. He also completed a fellowship in critical care from Mount Sinai Medical School in New York, USA.

He is the chairman of the credential committee of the Indian Society of Critical Care and Medicine and a member of the governing body of the Indian Chest Society.

Dr Gopi Chand served as Vice President of the National College of Chest Physicians from 2007 to 2009. He was President of the National College of Chest Physicians for two terms, from 2011 to 2013.

He chaired the Credential Committee of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine from 2011 to 2013. Additionally, he was a member of the Council of Regents at the American College of Chest Physicians for seven years. Dr Chand served on the Executive Council of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine from 2008 to 2010 and on the Governing Body of the Indian Chest Society from 2015 to 2017.

Dr Khilnani is also the senior editor of Critical Care: Lung India and a member of many editorial boards, including the Journal of Critical Care Medicine, Indian Journals of Chest Disease, and Allied Sciences India. He has published various research papers, including "Impact and Prognosis of the Expression of IFN-α among Tuberculosis Patients" and "Isoniazid-resistant, rifampicin-susceptible Tuberculosis in India."
